A journey across continents. Crafted for several lifetimes.
At Persephone, every gemstone we use is selected with the same care that goes into the design of our jewellery. Beauty, craftsmanship, and provenance are inseparable. No gemstone, regardless of its rarity or value, is worth the human suffering that may accompany its extraction.
As an analyst specialising in conflict risk management, governance, and humanitarian issues, it is natural for me to do a thorough assessment of the supply chain. I approach gemstone sourcing the way I do stakeholder mapping in any given zone.
While certifications such as Fair Trade can provide useful information, they are not, in our view, sufficient guarantees of ethical sourcing. Certification systems can vary significantly in their standards, oversight mechanisms, and transparency. For this reason, Persephone does not rely on labels or seals when making sourcing decisions.
We have a more cautious approach. We actively avoid gemstones originating from conflict-affected regions where mineral extraction may finance armed groups, fuel violence, contribute to corruption, or exacerbate human rights abuses. We likewise refuse to purchase gemstones sourced from operations known to employ child labour, exploit vulnerable workers, or operate without adequate regard for human dignity and safety.
Our sourcing philosophy is informed by principles commonly used in conflict risk analysis and responsible supply chain management. We assess geographic risk, governance conditions, known labour concerns, and available information regarding extraction and trading practices before introducing gemstones into our collections. We always err on the side of caution.
Persephone’s commitment is simple. Precious, semi-precious stones, and metals used in any of its pieces should never come at the expense of human rights, community wellbeing, or peace.
By consciously avoiding conflict gemstones and high-risk supply chains, we seek to create pieces that our customers can wear with confidence, knowing that their jewellery reflects respect for the people and places from which these treasures originate.
