Conversations on Coral

The magic of the coral gem

Thursday 21 November 2019, will be a day dedicated to ‘Conversations on Coral’, a precious material that is a cultural heritage of Italy and always fascinating for its uniqueness, its beauty, and the magical contents attributed to it.

Hostess Gioia De Simone, CEO of the historic company Antonino De Simone of Torre del Greco, will present the exhibition that celebrates 190 years of activity with a selection of ancient ethnic coral jewels. It will be a unique journey among objects made from the XVI to the XX century capable of uniting civilizations, stories and people through a journey that from the shores of the Mediterranean reaches the East and beyond the Ocean.

‘Experts’ will tell their stories starting from 10 am. Loredana Prosperi and Monica Odoli, respectively the director and the head of the Courses of IGI-Istituto Gemmologico Italiano will talk about coral as a gem, the relationship between man and nature, sustainability and traceability of its origin. Bianca Cappello, historian and critic of the jewel as well as curator of exhibitions and author of books. Cristina del Mare, ethnologist and expert on the use of coral in the various cultures of the world.

Pasquale Centoducati, an engraver from Torre del Greco, will offer a live demonstration. Gioia De Simone and Cristina del Mare will present their volume ‘Lungo le Vie del corallo’.

The exhibition is at the Spazio Campania in Piazza Fontana, in Milan and is open until 4 pm.
