CIBJO Opens Public Consultation to Develop a Global Glossary for Responsible Jewellery Practices

JVF

The World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO) has officially begun a public consultation to create a new tool aimed at improving clarity and consistency in how responsible business practices are communicated across the jewellery industry. The initiative, titled “The Blue List”, seeks to develop a neutral and widely accessible vocabulary to describe key values such as ethics, sustainability, and accountability.

The consultation was launched today in Paris at the headquarters of UFBJOP (Union Française de la Bijouterie, Joaillerie, Orfèvrerie, des Pierres & des Perles), alongside the OECD Forum on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains. It will remain open until September 6, 2025, concluding with a seminar/webinar in Vicenza, Italy, during the VicenzaOro trade fair.

A Step Toward Transparent and Trustworthy Communication

As references to responsible sourcing and ethical standards become more widespread, the lack of a shared vocabulary can lead to confusion or misinterpretation. The Blue List aims to provide a clear reference point that supports more transparent and trustworthy communication within the sector.

Collaborative and Open Process

The draft glossary reflects input from professionals across the value chain, from mining to retail, as well as legal experts and institutional partners. During the consultation, all stakeholders are encouraged to review the document and provide constructive feedback. The finalized version will be presented during the CIBJO Congress, scheduled to take place in Paris from October 27 to 29, 2025.

Call to Action

CIBJO invites companies, trade bodies, NGOs, certification agencies, and academic institutions to take part in the consultation. A shared terminology can serve as a strong foundation for meaningful progress in responsible business practices across the jewellery world.
